Cabo San Lucas Diving
Gentle waters, great visibility, and hundreds of species of fish all put scuba diving in Cabo San Lucas on the map. Located at the tip of the lengthy Baja peninsula separating the Pacific Ocean from the Sea of Cortez, Cabo offers excellent conditions for divers. The warm waters of the Sea of Cortez are teeming with tropical fish, reefs, and caves, and Cabo San Lucas diving trips reach these miraculous sights easily, just a fifteen-minute boat ride from the marina. Unlike other diving locations where lengthy transportation can eat away at your vacation time, the close proximity of quality diving sites has been luring enthusiasts to this Mexican coast.
If you want to dive in Los Cabos in a more serious way, there is also the option of live-aboard boats. These vacation packages can last anywhere from two to nine days, on your own private boat or with a small group, and will bring you to a range of diving spots from close to shore to 300 miles off the coast. Whale sharks and hammerhead sharks can be seen on these types of excursions, and with accommodation, food, and dives all combined into one price, live-aboard boats can make Cabo San Lucas diving an affordable option. Paying by individual dive can be expensive, so if you want to dive frequently, research the availability of a package.
The best Cabo scuba diving takes place from June through December, when the water is warmest and the visibility is at its best. This time period coincides with the hottest part of the year, and it isn’t the most popular time to visit Cabo. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the water in Cabo, whether it is scuba, snorkeling, fishing, or surfing, then traveling during this part of the year will be enjoyable. While some travelers find the temperatures a bit too hot, being in the water will keep you cool and you might be able to find excellent off-season deals on airfare and other transportation. Scuba diving in Cabo San Lucas is fantastic year-round; however, you may just not experience 100 feet of visibility if you dive between December and May.
Learning to dive in Los Cabos is also an option. If you’re a novice or have never tried scuba before, dive schools are available to introduce you to the basics or review them. While the main language of Cabo is, of course, Spanish, most people associated with the tourism industry speak English and can help you build a foundation of scuba knowledge. The close proximity of dive spots also means that scuba doesn’t have to be a huge commitment of your vacation, but rather just one fun, adventurous activity. Check that your dive school has the appropriate certifications, but many schools have been operating safely for two or three decades, showing visitors the wonders of the ocean. Cabo San Lucas diving can leave you with the skills to explore shipwrecks, sandfalls, and reefs on future vacations.
A dive in Los Cabos can reveal a glimpse into the 800 species of fish present in the Sea of Cortez. Warm waters (averaging from 68 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year) and interesting creatures such as manta rays help make scuba diving in Cabo San Lucas a rewarding experience. If you don’t want to take lessons but are interested in seeing what the ocean has to offer, snorkeling may be a great option for you. Eco tours and whale watching can also reveal some of the wildlife that has made Cabo famous.
